Advanced Database Search Techniques
Boolean Operators
• Many databases allow use of Boolean operators in advanced searches
• Boolean operators
• AND (example: wireless AND LAN AND Wi-Fi)
• OR (example: Java or C++)
• NOT (example: Java NOT coffee)
• Some databases require operators to be in upper case; read the Help to find out
• Some databases allow mixed operators, for example:
• Wireless and LAN not Wi-Fi
• ((A or B) and C) and not D
• Some databases have a formal structure for advanced searches. For examples, visit www.nova.edu/library/dils/lessons/databasesearching/index.htm
