This
course brings together telecommunications concepts, principles,
and procedures to provide students with a foundation for
understanding the infrastructure upon which computer network
configurations are built. Topics include data transmission
techniques, communications architectures and protocols, multiplexing,
and standards. Tactics for the design and implementation of
local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs),
and wide area networks (WANs) are introduced. New developments
in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) technologies, internetworking,
and wireless communications are described. Rapid changes in
the computer networks arena introduce new complexity in the
planning process. Practical approaches for building, implementing,
operating, and managing computer networks for accommodating
current and projected institutional requirements are explored.
